Summary
XXXTentacion, actually Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy (born January 23, 1998 in Plantation, died June 18, 2018 in Deerfield Beach) is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. His lyrics touched on topics including depression and alienation, while the genres he created varied from hip hop and nu metal to R&B and lo-fi. He was considered one of the leading representatives of the emo rap movement.
He released his debut album “17” on August 25, 2017. His second album, “?”, was released on March 16, 2018, and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
Jahseh was born on January 23, 1998 in Plantation, Florida, his parents were from Jamaica. His father; Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, gave him the name Jahseh in honor of Bob Marley”s song “So Jah Seh”. XXXTentacion stated that he also has Egyptian, Syrian, Indian and possibly Italian ancestry in an interview with The Beat in 2017. He had three siblings. XXXTentacion was mainly raised by his grandmother Collette Jones, his mother; Cleopatra Eretha Dreena Bernard could not care for him due to personal issues. When Onfroy was six years old, he allegedly tried to stab a man who tried to attack his mother. In early 2008, when Jasheh was 10 years old, his father was sentenced to nine years in prison.
XXXTentacion became interested in music after his aunt persuaded him to start attending the school choir and later the church choir. However, he was soon expelled from the school choir after attacking another student. X attended Margate Grammar School, from which he was later expelled after a series of fights. He then attended Sheridan House Family Ministries for six months. During this same period, Onfroy began listening to nu-metal, hard rock and rap, which inspired him to learn piano and guitar.
Jasheh later attended Piper High School, but dropped out in tenth grade. During high school, he described himself as “maladjusted”, quiet, insecure and depressed, Onfroy also got into frequent physical confrontations.
He started composing music after getting out of a correctional facility in 2012, at which time he shared his songs on Facebook, and showed them to his friends. At the time, no one took his work seriously. These songs are nowhere to be found and are lost, this Facebook account is long gone.

After being released from juvenile detention, Jasheh and Goulbourne met again, they planned to commit a series of home invasion robberies together to raise money, however they both gave up on the idea and Onfroy bought a Blue Snowball microphone and began recording music, which convinced Goulbourne to create his own songs as well. After Onfroy adopted the pseudonym XXXTentacion, he uploaded his first official song, titled “Vice City,” to SoundCloud. Onfroy claimed that he felt music was a better outlet for his feelings than a life of crime, and his then-girlfriend Geneva Ayala was someone who helped him understand that. He later began posting short snippets of his songs online, which he soon planned to release. Onfroy later joined the Very Rare group owned by Ski Mask the Slump God, the group later transformed into the Members Only collective. On May 11, 2014, he released the EP Ice Hotel.
Onfroy released another EP, titled The Fall, on November 21, 2014. In 2015, Jasheh released a joint EP with Ski Mask the Slump God, Members Only Vol. 1. On October 23, the follow-up to Members Only Vol. 1, Members Only, Vol. 2 was released this time featuring the entire Members Only collective. On December 30, 2015, he released the track “Look at Me”.
April 28, 2016. Onfroy released the EP Willy Wonka Was a Child Murderer, songs from the project were heavily inspired by heavy metal and indie music. In 2016, Jasheh began working as a call center operator but later quit that job in favor of his burgeoning music career and moved in with the rapper. In July 2016, Onfroy was arrested and charged with robbery and assault with a weapon. After posting $10,000 bail, Onfroy left jail and continued working on his debut independent album called Bad Vibes Forever, which was scheduled to be released on October 31, 2016. However, the album was delayed due to Onfroy”s subsequent arrest in early October on charges of beating his pregnant girlfriend. The arrest caused a lot of controversy, the issue became whether Onfroy”s girlfriend was actually pregnant and whether Jasheh actually attacked her.

2017: Prison Release, Revenge, 17, and A Ghetto Christmas Carol
In January 2017, “Look at Me” rose to popularity, reaching number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 33 on the Canadian Hot 100. The single gained popularity due to accusations towards Canadian rapper Drake for a similar rapping style in his song “KMT”. While in prison, Onfroy began getting contract offers from 6 major labels after his breakthrough “Look at Me”, eventually signing with Empire Distribution. After his release from prison on April 18, 2017, he released three more independent songs on SoundCloud. In an interview with WMIB, Onfroy announced that he was working on studio albums Bad Vibes and 17; as well as a mixtape. In an interview with XXL magazine, he said:
Onfroy announced his first nationwide tour on April 28, 2017. The tour, titled “The Revenge Tour”, had a total of 26 concerts and caused much controversy in the media, during one of the concerts Onfroy was knocked out after an argument on stage and an audience member was stabbed, Onfroy was also thrown into barricades by security. Jasheh announced the cancellation of the remaining concerts because his cousin was shot dead on June 24, 2017. Onfroy participated in XXL”s “2017 Freshman Class.” XXXTentacion released his debut solo mixtape, Revenge, on May 16, 2017. It consists of eight previously released tracks. The Members Only collective”s joint mixtape, Members Only, Vol. 3, was released on June 26, 2017. Onfroy released his debut album, 17, on August 25, 2017. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 86,000 copies in its first week. The album received mixed reactions from music critics, some of whom praised the album for its personal narratives and diverse musical style. September 3, 2017. Onfroy announced that Bad Vibes Forever, his second album, is still in production. Onfroy”s seven songs from album 17 – “Jocelyn Flores,” “Revenge,” “Fuck Love,” “Everybody Dies in Their Nightmares,” “Depression & Obsession,” “Save Me” and “Carry On” – debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at numbers 31, 77, 41, 54, 91, 94 and 95, respectively. Jocelyn Flores became Onfroy”s highest charting song since “Look at Me.” Onfroy at the same time made a guest appearance on Kodak Black”s song “Roll in Peace”, from Project Baby 2. The song reached number 31 on the Hot 100 chart. On September 12, 2017, Onfroy released his first official music video for his 2015 song “Look at Me”, the same video additionally featured the music video for his song “Riot” also from 2015. Onfroy”s label, Bad Vibes Forever, signed a distribution deal with Caroline, October 19, 2017. The deal, reportedly worth $6 million, was for one album only. Shortly after, on October 25, 2017, Onfroy announced that he was opting out of the deal, despite his representative claiming that the contract was still signed. Two days later, Jasheh announced his retirement. October 30, 2017. Onfroy announced that he would make music again if another rapper and his “former best friend,” Ski Mask the Slump God. Jasheh announced the album release date of Bad Vibes Forever for November 17, 2017. Speaking about the album, Onfroy said:

January 22, 2018. Onfroy announced on Instagram that he and New York rapper Joey Badass are working together on a new project and both released a freestyle to the song “King”s Dead” on SoundCloud on March 9, 2018. XXXTentacion uploaded the video to his YouTube channel titled “
Onfroy released a single on February 2, titled “Shining Like the Northstar.” He also appeared on the song “Banded Up” by music producer Ronny J, who was his longtime collaborator. Jasheh released the song “Hope” on his SoundCloud account on February 21, 2018, the song is dedicated to the victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that occurred in Parkland, a few miles north of Onfroy”s hometown. Onfroy has announced that he will release 2 songs at midnight on March 2, 2018, both songs are the first two singles from his album titled “?”. The lead single of “?”, “Sad!”, was released a few hours later alongside the track “Changes”, which features another member of XXL”s 2017 “Freshman”, PnB Rock. “Sad!” debuted at No. 17 on the Hot 100 chart, becoming his highest charting song in the U.S. After Onfroy”s death, it took the top spot before the official music video was released on June 28. The single has now reached nine-times platinum status in the U.S. alone, and on streaming services such as youtube and Spotify, the hit has been streamed a billion times consecutively. The songs “Moonlight” and “Hope” also made the list after his death, reaching #13 and #70 respectively.
Onfroy has announced the release date of his second studio album,?, for March 12, 2018. He released an 18-track list with guest appearances from Joey Bada$$, Travis Barker and PnB Rock, among others. ? was however released on March 16, 2018. ? debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming Onfroy”s first number one hit. Shortly after the release of ?, Onfroy signed a new contract with Empire Distribution for his third solo album worth ten million dollars.

Posthumous editions
On June 21, 2018, the first posthumous song featuring Onfroy, “Ghost Busters,” was released by rapper Trippie Redd with guest appearances from Quavo and Ski Mask the Slump God. XXL released a series of freestyles that Onfroy performed as part of his contribution to the “2017 Freshman Cypher”. Ugly God released a song titled “Tear Drop” on June 22, 2018, which featured Onfroy”s aforementioned unreleased cryptic verses. On August 31, 2018, Houston rapper Sauce Walka released his mixtape Drip God, which featured a song with Onfroy titled “Voss” produced by producer Carnage.
On August 17, 2018, iLoveMakonnen announced a track by the late singer Lil Peep and Onfroy titled “Falling Down”. The song is a rework of “Sunlight on Your Skin” performed by Makonnen and Peep, the new version features verses Onfroy recorded after Peep”s death to pay tribute to him. The single was officially released on September 19, 2018.
September 27, 2018. Kanye West announced that Onfroy will make a guest appearance on his ninth studio album, Yandhi. The same day it was announced that Onfroy would also appear on Lil Wayne”s twelfth album, Tha Carter V, the album was released the next day. Onfroy appeared on the song “Don”t Cry.” The music video for this song was later released on Onfroy”s 21st birthday.
On October 22, 2018, Onfroy”s manager Soloman Sobande stated in an interview with Billboard that Jasheh”s third album will be released soon. On October 25, 2018, producer Skrillex released the song “Arms Around You,” which is a collaboration with Onfroy, Lil Pump, Maluma, and Swae Lee. The track was originally recorded in 2017 with rapper Rio Santana.
On November 8, 2018, the release date for Onfroy”s first posthumous album and also his third studio album, Skins, was announced for December 7, 2018. The first single from Skins, titled “Bad!”, was released on November 9, 2018. Onfroy unexpectedly appeared on Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla Sign”s song “Scared of the Dark” from the soundtrack album Spider-Man: Universe.
On January 23, 2019, the Members Only collective released the album Members Only, Vol. 4.
On June 12, 2019, Craig Xen released the song Run It Back! along with XXXTentacion.
A month later, on July 21, 2019, another posthumous song was released, titled “Royalty,” which featured, Ky-Mani Marley, Stefflon Don, and Vybz Kartel. The song was inspired by the dance-hall genre and was the first song released from the album, Bad Vibes Forever, which was set to be released in the fall of 2019. On October 21, 2019, the song “Hearteater” was officially released as the second single from the album. On November 22, 2019, the title track from the album Bad Vibes Forever was released. The fourth and final studio album was released on December 6, 2019. In January 2020. Lil Wayne sampled XXXTentacion”s song “The Boy with the Black Eyes” on his album Funeral, on the track “Get Outta My Head”. On June 2, 2020, a re-release of the single RIOT was released to support the Black Lives Matter movement caused mainly by the riots following George Floyd”s death.
XXXTentacion”s music has explored in a wide range of genres including emo rap, trap, lo-fi, and indie rock. His influences included artists such as Kurt Cobain, whom he described as his biggest inspiration, The Weeknd, Tupac Shakur, Cage the Elephant, The Fray, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, Hoobastank, Chingy, Gorillaz, Coldplay, Tech N9ne, and Eminem. Speaking about his influences XXXTentacion said:
XXXTentacion as an artist has been defined as versatile, and his music has been described as: having a “lo-fi” and experimental aesthetic, drawing influence from heavy metal. His music also tends to contain distorted bass and an “intentional lack of refinement”. Speaking of this, XXXTentacion said that intentionally bad mixing in his tracks makes his music “authentic.” Some fans have also noted that his music has inspired many rising artists such as Lil Pump and Trippie Redd.
XXXTentacion generally changed his vocal style depending on the type of song he was performing. His vocal style has been described as showing “emotional vulnerability” in much more depressing songs and as replicating screams in much more aggressive songs. His lyrics have been described as bizarre and shocking, often referring to “violence, sex and drugs”, although in some projects, such as The Fall and 17, Onfroy”s lyrics were more emotional compared to his previous work, often referring to him and loneliness, depression, isolation and anxiety. He was also known for his “depressing and sometimes devastating” music that called attention to mental health.
Onfroy was considered a controversial figure in the hip-hop industry due to his attacks on fans, public feuds with other artists, and general social media scandals and controversies. Spin has referred to Onfroy as “rap”s most controversial man”.
On August 24, 2017, the day before the release of his debut album, 17, Onfroy uploaded a video to the social media platform Instagram depicting his posed suicide by hanging. He later uploaded a video on Instagram as well, depicting the video as part of his music video.
Onfroy uploaded a YouTube video for his song “Riot” on September 12, 2017. A controversial scene in the video shows him putting a noose around the neck of a white child and then hanging him. Speaking on a live stream on Instagram, he told his observers that the video does not support the Black Lives Matter movement, but does support the All Lives Matter movement.
Onfroy announced his retirement from music on October 27, 2017. Onfroy then stated that he would start making music again if South Florida rapper, frequent collaborator and his “former best friend” Ski Mask the Slump God became his friend again, telling his fans to urge Ski Mask to befriend X. The post led to an exchange of words on social media, with Onfroy explaining his position via the Instagram Live feature on Instagram:

Ski Mask then claimed that Onfroy had threatened his family. December 8, 2017. Onfroy wrote on Instagram: “Don”t worry about what you said about me, you know who supports you, I love you forever,” referring to Ski Mask the Slump God. They later reconciled during the 2018 Rolling Loud festival in Miami, ending the feud.
Canadian rapper Drake unveiled a new song titled “KMT” on January 28, 2017. The song, after its announcement, was compared by users on social media to Onfroy”s breakthrough song “Look at Me” due to its use of a similar rapping style. Prior to KMT”s release, HotNewHipHop revealed that Drake had been following Onfroy”s Twitter account. In an interview with XXL, Onfroy was asked about Drake”s track, Jasheh replied:
Drake released the mixtape More Life on March 18, 2017, which included the track “KMT.” Onfroy was released from prison two weeks later, then during an interview with WMIB, he called Drake a “bitch” and said he respects Drake”s influence but feels “KMT” disrespects him. The next day on Twitter, Onfroy posted a photo of Drake”s mother saying “he can get it.” He then posted a photo of Drake”s mother and himself as a child with Onfroy”s face photoshopped over the face of Drake”s father, Dennis Graham. Later, in an interview with DJ Semtex, Drake denied these accusations that he stole Onfroy”s “flow.” Drake also denied knowing him and said he had only heard of him due to rumors circulating after the release of “KMT”. Onfroy responded on his Twitter, asking that Drake “come to Florida.”
Rapper Offset of hip-hop group Migos, during a live stream on Instagram, defended Drake and attacked Onfroy, further escalating the dispute.
Chicago rapper 600Breezy then claimed that Drake gave him permission to get involved in the dispute and attack Onfroy. 600Breezy told Onfroy that he “got some niggas that will knock you out in your own city”. 600Breezy later went to Florida to try to find X, although it was fruitless.
On Nov. 14, Onfroy published a post on his Instagram accusing the rap group Migos of attacking him and pointing guns at him because of his past issues with Drake.
Streaming service Spotify announced on May 10, 2018 that it will stop promoting or recommending music by Onfroy, incarcerated rapper Tay-K, and R&B artist R. Kelly. Spotify stated: “We don”t censor content because of the behavior of an artist or creator, but we do want our editorial decisions – what we choose to program – to reflect our values.” The decision to remove Onfroy”s music from select playlists was later reversed.

Incidents during concerts
On March 26, 2017, when Onfroy was released from prison, he organized a surprise concert that took place on April 7 in Miami. The ticket price was $5, which made a lot of people gather for the performance. However, before it took place, a riot broke out. Police eventually escorted Onfroy out and shut down the show.
Rapper and Members Only member Wifisfuneral was attacked during the first show of his Revenge Tour in Houston on May 31, 2017. Wifisfuneral jumped into the audience, where several audience members began kicking him.
During a concert in San Diego in June 2017, a fight ensued that left Onfroy unconscious and a member of the audience stabbed. The assailant who attacked Jaseh was an associate of rapper Rob Stone, who was involved in a dispute with Onfroy and Ski Mask. The dispute had already led to Ski Mask the Slump God being attacked during the rapper”s Desiigner tour. Stone released a track titled “Xxxtracredit” after the incident, in which he mentions the attack in San Diego and then tells Onfroy to “not come back to California.” Later in the interview, Stone denied knowing who the attacker was. In October 2017, Stone confirmed that he and Onfroy had resolved their dispute.
Onfroy punched a fan during a concert in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 16, 2017. Jasheh claimed he acted in self-defense because he asked that no one in the audience touch him, warning that he would hit the person who touched him.
Onfroy was scheduled to perform at Concord Music Hall in Chicago on June 20, 2017. However, the concert was cancelled at the last minute, leading to hundreds of fans flooding the streets and a near riot. Onfroy said the reason the show was canceled was a decision made by the venue”s management. Three days later, his cousin was shot due to which Jasheh cancelled his tour.
Following the release of Onfroy”s album 17, a free admission concert was announced to take place on September 2, 2017 in Tampa, Florida. The venue was only able to handle 750 spectators, but over 3,000 people showed up for the concert which resulted in the cancellation of the event. This led to many fans of the artist causing a riot in the street, police had to break up the crowd. Some fans later claimed online that they were attacked with tear gas by police officers during the riot.
Onfroy was involved in another fight with a fan during the Rolling Loud festival in California on October 23, 2017. Onfroy announced on Instagram that the fight was purely self-defense.

Problems at an early age
In late 2012, Onfroy was arrested for possession of 21 grams of marijuana. He was sentenced to one month in juvenile detention and six months in a behavioral correctional facility. Shortly after his release, he was arrested again for breaking into a home to steal a laptop on which he wanted to make music.
In 2014, Onfroy was sentenced to one year in juvenile detention on weapons charges. According to Onfroy, while he was in custody, the district attorney attempted to try him as an adult for weapons possession, for which he would have faced a sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison.

Dylan Turner
Dylan Turner, a New Jersey native studying at Full Sail University, was XXXTentacion and Ski Mask”s manager in 2016. Due to Onfroy”s inexperience in music and Turner”s inexperience in career management, they agreed to let Turner earn only from the proceeds of the song “Look at Me!” When that amount skyrocketed, an enraged Onfroy broke into Turner”s apartment, stole his laptop and stabbed him in the stomach. Turner required emergency surgery and suffered serious life-threatening injuries, and the loss of important data on the laptop ended his career. However, Turner pledged to drop the charges against Onfroy if his computer could be returned, Jasheh kept his word even though all files were deleted.

Assault with a weapon and domestic assault
In July 2016, days after he was released on bail for the stabbing of Dylan Turner, Onfroy was arrested and charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and domestic assault committed nearly two years earlier. According to the arrest report, Onfroy entered Che Thomas” home with three other individuals armed with firearms. After hitting Thomas three times with the gun, Onfroy fled the home with an iPad, an iPhone, a Sony PlayStation Portable and $20.
Onfroy was originally arrested in Orlando until he was transferred to Orange County. His continued transfer was due to prosecutors” ultimately successful plan to find a jurisdiction that would charge him as an adult for a crime committed as a juvenile. He was paroled in September 2016.

Beating
After posting $10,000 bail in early October of the same year while awaiting trial, Onfroy was arrested again on charges of witness tampering and battery on a pregnant victim. March 26, 2017. Onfroy was released from jail after being charged with robbery and assault with a weapon. His trial for the beating of the pregnant victim was originally scheduled to take place in May 2017 but was postponed several times, finally scheduled to take place on October 5, 2017. September 8, 2017. Pitchfork released testimony from Onfroy”s victim. The trial was then delayed again to a date of December 11, 2017. Controversy arose again after Onfroy donated $100,000 to domestic violence prevention programs, and then when Onfroy announced an event to support rape victims, though it was later canceled.
Onfroy”s trial was postponed again after Onfroy”s ex-girlfriend, the alleged victim in the case, filed an affidavit asking that the charges be “completely dropped.” She also refused to testify in court. In response, the prosecution decided to split the case into two parts, with witness tampering charges against Onfroy, and a new trial date was announced for December 15, 2017. December 10, 2017. Onfroy posted a message on Instagram, writing:

Onfroy pleaded not guilty and was arrested after the prosecution filed a motion. On December 20, 2017, it was confirmed that Onfroy was released to house arrest. Onfroy was released from house arrest on March 21, 2018.
In 2019, documents and recordings of Onfroy”s phone calls to his mother that he was serving time from prison were released, suggesting that Onfroy”s ex-girlfriend may never have been pregnant.

Snapchat video controversy
Shortly after his release from house arrest, a video surfaced on Snapchat of Onfroy punching a woman, the video dated back to 2013 when he was 15 years old. Onfroy”s attorneys claimed that the video, which includes a caption written by the woman that sardonically reads “I hate this nigga,” was a joke. Onfroy later claimed that he feared the woman was going to scam him financially and that her family members had already called him asking for money which is why he hit her. The woman shown in the video with Onfroy days later, said she was “scared for her life”; however, according to TMZ, Onfroy intended to sue the woman for fraud and defamation after her family allegedly demanded a large sum. of money in exchange for her silence. The woman later released a statement saying that Onfroy”s version of events was correct and that she “hopes people see the video for the funny context in which it was recorded and nothing more.” His domestic violence charges, for which he was awaiting trial, were dismissed after his death.

Leaked recordings
October 23, 2018. Pitchfork released a secretly recorded recording of 18-year-old Onfroy talking to friends during his arrest on October 8, 2016. Pitchfork claimed that in the recording, he allegedly admitted to domestic violence and described the entire incident in which he stabbed nine people. The tape was considered a confession by the prosecution. An expanded version of the recording later released and included Onfroy who said of his girlfriend: “I didn”t touch her. I forgave her.” One particularly tense conversation about Onfroy”s ex-girlfriend occurred on October 26, 2016, when he told another woman: “I already got what I wanted, I already punched her in the face – her face on the internet, I made her look bad on the internet,”. Later that day, an audio clip of the conversation was posted on Onfroy”s Instagram, where he said he “smashed her face.”
Onfroy had two half-siblings – older sister Ariana and younger brother Aiden. Onfroy lived his entire life in Florida, in the past living with rapper Denzel Curry and producer Ronny J. Before his death, Onfroy moved into a 6,000-square-foot (560 m2) mansion in Parkland, Florida, which he purchased in November 2017 for $1.4 million. In February 2018. Onfroy made a post on Instagram about getting ready to go back to school, and in March 2018, he announced that he was going to college to get his GED. Onfroy has publicly posted about his battle with depression and his mental health.
Onfroy”s former girlfriend, Geneva Ayala, has accused Onfroy of domestic violence. According to Ayala”s statement, Onfroy sometimes beat her, choked her, broke the hangers on her legs, threatened to chop off her hair or cut off her tongue, pressed knives or scissors to her face and held her head under water in the bathroom, promising to drown her. “His favorite thing was just catching my mouth,” Ayala says. “That always left welts on my lips.” The first incident of domestic violence allegedly occurred when Onfroy punched Ayala and broke her iPhone 6S because she complimented his new jewelry. Onfroy later repaired her phone. In one incident recounted to the prosecutor, Ayala said Onfroy asked her what item she wanted him to push into her vagina: a grill fork with a long handle or a wire grill brush, she chose the fork, and Onfroy told her to undress. She claimed that Onfroy lightly dragged the tool along the inside of her thigh, at which point she passed out. Onfroy maintained his innocence until his death. Ayala said Onfroy often blamed her for suicide attempts. Ayala said he used to fill the bathtub with water and then bring a microwave and wave it around, threatening to let her go. On another occasion, he reportedly dangled by his legs from a balcony on the twelfth floor and again threatened suicide. After Onfroy”s death, Ayala addressed those who discussed her accusations against Onfroy: “It”s disgusting that people are speaking on my behalf.”
Around January 2018. Onfroy became involved with Jenesis Sanchez. Three days after his death, Onfroy”s mother announced on Instagram that Sanchez was pregnant with Onfroy. In an interview, Sanchez said that Onfroy was notified of her pregnancy three weeks before his death. The baby is named Gekyume, was confirmed as a boy on August 22, 2018 and was born on January 26, 2019.

Political views
Onfroy has been public about his political and personal beliefs throughout his career. In 2016, Onfroy did not support Donald Trump”s candidacy for president, instead tweeting: “Vote for Bernie Sanders.” His song “Hate Will Never Win” contains lyrics against Trump.
Onfroy claims that “If marijuana were legal everywhere, the world would be a better place.” He has also expressed his support for the legalization of gay marriage and has worked closely with transgender musician Fifty Grand.
During the Revenge tour, Onfroy publicly declared his support for civil and gay rights and denounced the racist and homophobic rhetoric of the Ku Klux Klan, saying:
At 3:56 p.m. local time on June 18, 2018. Onfroy, leaving the Riva Motorsports motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida, was blocked from leaving the parking lot by a black Dodge Journey SUV. Two armed men got out of the SUV and approached the rapper, who was in the driver”s seat. After a brief struggle, the armed men stole a small Louis Vuitton brand bag containing $50,000 and shot Onfroy several times. The perpetrators fled the scene in their SUV. Onfroy was later transported by paramedics to nearby Broward Health North Hospital in Deerfield Beach, where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. Suspect Dedrick Devonshay Williams of Pompano Beach was arrested two days after the shooting, shortly before 7 p.m. He was being held in the Broward County Jail, and was charged with first-degree murder without premeditation. In the weeks following the incident, three different people were arrested in connection with Onfroy”s murder.
In his will, Onfroy named his mother Cleopatra and his brother Aiden as the sole beneficiaries of his estate. Onfroy”s future child, with whom his girlfriend was pregnant at the time of his death, was not named in the will.

Funeral
A service with Onfroy”s open casket took place June 27 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, where fans were allowed to pay tribute to the artist. His private funeral took place on June 28, where rappers Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty and singer Erykah Badu were among the attendees. He was buried in a mausoleum at Gardens of Boca Raton Memorial Park in Boca Raton, Florida.
Christopher Weingarten of Rolling Stone expressed the opinion that XXXTentacion”s success as a “thrilling spirit of the times, industry-breaking, boundary-shattering phenomenon” is “overshadowed” by his allegations against his ex-girlfriend. Nevertheless, he claimed that despite the media”s attempts to suppress him, XXXTentacion”s “influence on music will be felt for years to come” and his recordings “helped signal a new era of post-stream and post-genre teenagers.” XXXTentacion left what Rolling Stone called “a huge musical footprint” because of his influence on young fans and popularity during his career. The article compared his cultural influence to that of Ritchie Valens and Darby Crash.
Highlighting his ambivalent public reception during his short career, Billboard wrote:
“The provocative and polarizing artist seemed to thrive in both controversy and art, often blurring the lines between shocking reality and button-pushing creativity. XXX”s short career was equally characterized by the Florida rapper becoming a martyr to a legion of fans and a warning to many others.”
On June 18, 2019, exactly one year after XXXTentacion”s death, an official documentary on his life has been announced; it will feature footage from around April 2017 telling biographical details. XXXTentacion has RIAA certified sales of 38 million units in the US and BPI certified sales of over 7 million units in the UK. He is also one of the top 20 best-selling artists of all time in terms of digital singles, with a total of 49 million RIAA-certified digital sales as of June 2021.

Controversy
XXXTentacion”s personal life and history are also considered important parts of his legacy. An article in The Guardian described his legacy in more critical terms, stating that he “will be remembered mainly for the extraordinarily cruel violence he committed on vulnerable people, particularly his ex-girlfriend, for crimes for which he never expressed remorse.” According to the article, his music “reflected a life of contempt for humanity, both other people”s and his own”; he rarely attempted to engage in bravado or boasting, instead focusing on “mental illness, suicide, extreme misogyny and a prevailing sense of numbness.”
An article in The Atlantic made similar criticisms, though it also noted that XXXTentacion “reminded young fans in particular that their hurt was important but not the sum of their lives” and that he “gave voice to their insecurities.” The article acknowledged that although he spent his career encouraging young fans to recognize their greater worth, XXXTentacion”s legacy is nonetheless characterized by the trauma he both experienced and caused. In The Washington Post, Chris Richards commented on XXXTentacion”s complicated legacy, contrasting how he “encouraged his fans to find hope in the fog of their despair, but enthusiastically bragged about the joy he felt in brutalizing others.” According to Richards, XXXTentacion”s music “brought solace to the depressed” while legitimizing the kind of violence he practiced and legitimized his fans” pain while erasing the suffering of victims of domestic violence. XXXTentacion”s music serves as an example to Richards of how a “hate song” can normalize such feelings in “hateful people,” which contributes to the deep paranoia in society about the hate that may be in the minds of others.
Onfroy”s former girlfriend Geneva Ayala, who accused him of domestic violence in 2016, said of the controversy surrounding her and Onfroy”s past: “It”s disgusting that people are speaking on my behalf. I don”t care if nobody cared about me however many months ago I lost my life. He did. This is permanent. I”m still here. How do you think I feel? Does everyone expect me to feel relieved or happy? No, I”m broken.”
On June 9, 2020, there was a book about Onfroy”s biography called Look at Me!: The Xxxtentacion Story. The book was authored by Jonathan Reiss.
